The Periyar Tiger Reserve is shining example of how indigenous tribal communities live harmoniously in the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The tribal communities like the the Mannans, Palliyans, Malayarayans, Mala Pandarams, Urails and Ulladans are examples of how man can still live in a peaceful coexistence with nature in this modern era.

One of the primary reasons for this is because they have been able to hold on to their traditions and culture despite the temptations of modern society. This culture gave them their art forms and a sense of respect for the nature and the environment they live in.

During my stay at Thekkady, I had the opportunity to witness an hour long dance performance of the Palliyan and Mannan dancers. This one hour program included a session on the history of these tribal communities, the various musical instruments and costumes used for the performance. At the end of the program one can also get a chance to pose for photographs with the performers. This program is organized at the Vanasree Auditorum from 6- 7 pm every day.
